The Next Factor captures both Penang inshore races

At first, the wind did not want to come out and play for the Penang Inshore race series of the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, but PRO Simon James, aka the Wind Whisperer, stuck at it and was able to pull out some gusts from his bag of tricks. At 12:34, Simon dropped the AP, and the third leg of the regatta was underway with the Racing, Premier and Sports classes sailing a two-lap windward-leeward course. He then sent classes 4 and 5 (Club & Cruising) on one long triangle course.  Classes one-three got in a second race with classes one & two doing WR5 and class three WR3.

In the first race of class one (Racing), last year’s winner Rolf Heemskerk’s The Next Factor won its first race of the regatta defeating Sarab Jeet Singh’s Windshikher by 20 seconds on corrected time though Windshikher took line honours in this race (00:51:17). Ray Roberts Hollywood Samurai was only three seconds behind Windshikher on corrected time: Blitz, Aftershock, and Uranus followed in that order in the six-boat class.

The second race in this class saw The Next Factor win again, followed by Hollywood Samurai, Blitz, Windshikher, Aftershock, and Uranus with Hollywood Samurai taking line honours (01:58:07).

The two-boat class two (Premier) saw Peter Cremers’ sleek Shatoosh, defeat RSYC Commodore Ramasamay Menon Rama Rama VG, in both races, giving the beautiful Warwick 75 four straight wins in the class to date.

The three-boat class three (Sports) saw Amir Zohri’s Malabar over Lee Yi Min’s Jolt by 43 seconds on corrected followed by Matt Whittingham’s Insanity. The second race, however, saw Jolt take top spot with Insanity coming second and Malabar placing third.

Class four (Club) with six boats competing saw Keith Garry’s Beaux Espirit win its first race of the regatta defeating Peter Jong’s Kesini by close to ten minutes on corrected time. James Duke’s Kimikimi was third, and Maduzi with the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah on board took fourth spot in the class followed by Steve Manning’s Black Baza. Dennis Chan & Joon Ming’s Duan Duan who did not finish.

Class five (Cruising) with six boats also competing saw Amir Zohri’s Dash beat Keith Miller’s Sade by just over ten minutes on corrected time. Marikh, helmed by Muhammad Husaini bin Mohd R had an FPA and Yukinori Kirihara’s Lucky Marlin did not start the race.

This regatta is steeped in tradition and part of that continues on Tuesday the 18th with the famous Raja Muda rickshaw race on the boardwalk of Penang’s Straits Quay Marina followed by the regatta’s inaugural trivia quiz and then inshore harbour racing in Penang the next day.

For the third year in a row, the Malaysian Navy team won the famous Raja Muda Healey Mac rickshaw races on the boardwalk of Penang’s Straits Quay Marina yesterday, and the regatta’s inaugural trivia contest was held at La Chica and won by Red G.

The Penang prize-giving took place at the Khoo Kongsi Chinese temple as it does every year. Aside from being a cultural mecca, parts of the Hollywood film Anna and the King starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat were filmed there.    ‘

Regatta Chairman Isyrad Ismail and and Amat Tuah Chow Berhormat Kon Yeow, the Chief Minister of Penang handed out awards to the winners of the Pangkor-Penang passage race while the Raja Muda himself and RSYC Commodore Ramasamay Menon handed out the awards to the winner of the Penang harbour race. The evening closed out with Tengku Amir Shah and Commodore Rama presenting former RSYC manager John Ferguson and current manager of the Straits Quay marina with an honour for his service to the Royal Selangor Yacht Club and the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta.
